Gulf of Kalloni
Aristotle's Lagoon
The Gulf of Kalloni will remind you of a large lake. The narrow and shallow passage creates the appropriate conditions of temperature and nutrients on the famous sardines and oysters and scallops mainly propagated in the this Gulf.
The scenery of volcanic rocks, olive groves, pine forests and wetlands and the salt-pits, create a truly impressive formation.
Enter into this landscape and let it carry you away.
Here you will see rare birds and if you are lucky you will come across the Persian squirrel (Sciurus anomalus) and kipomygalida of Lesvos (Crocidura lasia).
Again if you are interested in rare plants here and specifically in the area of Parakoila you will find the yellow rhododendron (Rhododendron Luteum Sweet) that does not exist anywhere else in Greece and many wild orchids.
The Kalloni Bay and the coastal area around it has been included in the European network of protected areas Natura 2000.
